Unusual Verge Fusee Pocket Watch Case, Empty 54.6mm

Case looks to have been made to fit something specific at some point given evidence of welding.
The case is big, measuring 54.6mm wide, 44.5mm inner diameter where the dial would sit and 47.5mm on the front inner where crystal would be. It is 25mm thick.
At first I thought this was an outer case but it clearly has the hinge component for the movement to be attached inside so looks to have been a singular case made to fit a movement of some kind.
